Forgive me for blowing my own trumpet...
By the time I'd graduated in 1985 I'd already established a working relationship with The Guardian in London. I went on to work with them for a couple of years and then moved to The Observer where I worked for six years covering a wide gamut of news and features commissions, while learning how to travel quickly and efficiently.
In 1993 I began taking on commissions with graphic design agencies and quickly gained a reputation for being able to capture real working life in all its imperfect authenticity. When there seemed to be a glut of shiny images of perfect models in perfect locations, perfectly posed, I think, for some sensible companies, having some realism set them apart. There was much to admire in an organisation that was proud of its own people, doing there work, in their real offices. I used to joke that I shot Gritty, not Getty... but it was my job to make it all look rather lovely. As one client suggested "You can stick him in the crummiest corporate environments peopled with the grimmest souls and he'll still deliver interesting, vibrant shots."
I have worked with some of the best creative led agencies in the UK and USA for over thirty years, travelling the world, specialising in capturing office and factory life, as well as the local culture for some of the world's biggest brands.
